When Flying Was Fun

Sitting on the plane squished into a seat with no leg room remembering when flying used to be fun. Flying was always exciting to me - a new adventure upon landing. Now it is an effort to be civil to the rude TSA employees who have the unfortunate task of enforcing rediculous reactive safety policies and a scramble to find an overhead compartment for the carryon bag. Now with the airlines charging for checked bags, more and more passengers are trying to bring their suitcases onboard. In an effort to cram more people on each flight, they have added more seats placing them closer together, removing any semblance of leg room, and not adding more overhead compartments to accomidate the increase in number of passengers.

Now I look fondly back at a time when every passenger would get a hot face towel and hard candy to suck on on takeoff and landing. When every child would be given a pair of pilot's wings and a pack of slippery playing cards. When you could go up and sit in the cockpit with the pilots and imagine you were in a spaceship.

I wonder if airline travel will ever be "fun" again.

Brief thoughts on the Naturescapes seminar with Greg Downing and Rick Sammon.

Yesterday I attended the Naturescape Photography series with a morning lecture by Greg Downing and the afternoon session by Rick Sammon. While much of what Greg went over was very basic, he made some excellent points and I really appreciate him showing and talking about the gear that he uses. The best thing he emphasized, in my opinion, that is not often underlined, is get it right in the camera. Yes, aftermarket tools like Photoshop are wonderful, but if you get it right in the camera, the less time you need to spend in front of your computer.

While I could go on for hours talking about the differences between film and digital, the biggest change for me in switching from film to all digital was the amount of time I spent in front of a computer. My workload increased by a factor of 5. With film, I would take the images, throw the film into a bag and send it off to the lab for processing, receive it back, do a quick edit, show the clients and they placed their orders. Now I am the primary lab. I sit in front of the computer, edit, crop, tweak, change to B&W, fix minor things (like the infamous backlit gnats) .... and then I show the clients the images. The better job I do in camera, the less I have to do in the computer.

Rick Sammon had a very different lecture. Rick talked much more about the art of photography. "Setting your goal" for the future image was a great tip as well as "seeing the light" and how each image should tell a story. Perhaps the comment that struck the deepest chord in me was to never give up. Of course in order to do that, one needs to have faith in what they are creating and that it is worth monetizing. To capture an image, for me, is a deeply personal moment. It is my attempt to grasp a fraction of a memory. The idea that someone might want to pay for it is hard to believe sometimes. A rather amusing stance coming from me especially as my candid portrait photography sells very well through Sterling Portraits. Then again, someone else is pricing and selling my work. Rick game me a lot to think about with regard to my photography as an art and I'll be mulling over these concepts for days.

Civil Rights Is Not A Ballot Issue

I find it ironic that Civil Rights on the Gay Marriage issue is continually being put on the ballot in many states. I would have thought that we would have learned from history that the rights of the minority are often trampled by the narrow views of the majority. Certainly our history post Civil War should have taught us that. The Maine defeat is yet another example that narrow minded voters vote from a place of ignorance and fear.
